Okay so I don’t use twitter I guess a lot of people use it to comment to the show but I’ll comment here so, deal with it
Yeah so you were talking about rules in video games, what makes it good and such. And then you came into what makes a good book. And when you sad that I remembered me and my friend talking about the poem “the raven” and that Edgar Allan Poe had written “The Philosophy of Composition” were he talks about this. So yeah that’s that pretty much.
Nice show.

Hi Simon.
People do, in fact, comment here as well!
I’d not read that Poe essay before – pretty interesting, actually. It made me remember trying to shoe-horn bits of Aristotle’s Poetics into one of my exams at university…
I’m currently reading and digesting.

I was thinking about your difficulties with finding ‘five things that make a successful game’ and started to think that this is probably part of the difficulty with reviewing games. If it was easy to find these five things journalists could have an exam-like mark scheme and there would be less controversy about reviews. Keep up the good work

Doing this bullet point style..
- EA better keep their hands away from Bioware!!!
And I hate how they keep labeling games.
Just let games be games and be fun.
- That guy is wrong, I don’t need a reward to do the same thing in a game.
I play Spelunky over.. and over.. without getting rewards. any…. But I keep playing that game.
Grinding sucks.
- If I cared about Left 4 dead I think id also be upset. 1 Year doesn’t feel like enough development.
Sadly All I see is nonstop zombie killing.. Fun for 4 hours. But I am quite done.
- IGN 360 podcast said basically that this is a pointless worry, people who buy a game from Gamestop, Gamestop buys a game from a publisher to sell. They don’t put on a gold hat and gold shoes and dance around with this wealth.
The money from used games usually goes into more games.
- No comment
- Hate The Sims. I really don’t like the idea of the sims.
Live a normal life. great.. thanks.. THAT is why I play games.
Animal crossing is the sims done right.
- No Comment.
- Natal can be used for a Hardcore RTS, think about it.
Rare is making a hardcore game for Natal too.
IGN editors have said Natal works pretty good.
Milo works too, but in a hilariously broken way.
- Natal can be used with a controller.
Or a piece of plastic
Or a ball
Or anything you own.
An Idea I heard is that Forza 3 should encompass the ability to add in a head turning thing to change the in cockpit view without losing car control.
- No comment.

And good luck with Synapse.

Sorry to post twice, but wanted to post my thoughts on the used game thing. I feel that the sale of used games probably has much less of a negative effect on the industry than some people seem to think: people who sell their used games to the shops often use the money they get to buy more games, and everyone who buys used games goes into a shop and it’s fairly likely they could buy other (not necessarily used) games while they’re in there.

@Jimi
Agreeing on metrics of quality is always almost completely impossible by definition.
@Wrongfire
“Just let games be games and be fun.” Amen. Unfortunately EA is a giant, occasionally effective money machine and always has been.
“Sadly All I see is nonstop zombie killing.. Fun for 4 hours. But I am quite done.” Yeah, that seems to be the case for a lot of people. But some people can’t get enough zombie killing.
“I play Spelunky over.. and over.. without getting rewards. any…. But I keep playing that game.” Ha ha genius.
“Natal can be used for a Hardcore RTS, think about it.” I am definitely thinking about it…um…nope, nothing’s coming.
“IGN editors have said Natal works pretty good.” The rumours are that it is, in fact, quite good. Really want to have a go with it. I’m sure I will hate it straight away as I am an old curmudgeon. Actually, I didn’t hate the Wiimote straight away so there is hope for me yet. I suddenly have an urge to play Ghost Squad…sorry, I mean “GHOST SQUAD!!!!”
“- Natal can be used with a controller.
Or a piece of plastic
Or a ball
Or anything you own.”
Penis? Can you actually now play a game with your penis? The possibilities are endless. Yes, I own a penis.
“An Idea I heard is that Forza 3 should encompass the ability to add in a head turning thing to change the in cockpit view without losing car control.” Pfff, that sounds utterly disgusting IMHO.
“And good luck with Synapse.” Thank you and cheers for the in-depth comments – very cool!
@Jimi again
“I feel that the sale of used games probably has much less of a negative effect on the industry than some people seem to think: people who sell their used games to the shops often use the money they get to buy more games,”
That’s really interesting and I wonder if it could be proved in something more than an anecdotal way. I know that publishers get terrified of retail getting power over them – I’m sure retailers will say the same thing back. TBH, as the size of the used market is so large, I do think that publishers should get a look-in.

to continue with the reward thing, I think in a way, if a game is fun enough in the gameplay, that alone is the reward.
Just to see a new stage, or the next boss, or the next piece of story. In another words progress itself is rewarding.
and I think that is a sign of excellent if not perfect game design.
Which is why Gears 2 did not appeal to me, sure I get worthless achievements if I beat the game, but It wasn’t fun to progress through it. So I never beat the game.
