I will never, ever buy Global Agenda

          i-will-never-ever-buy-global-agenda

From Eurogamer:

If Hi-Rez is trying to sell its game to some as a straight shooter, the bigger problem with the PvP and PvE (besides the fact that all four of the classes have trouble shooting straight) is the lack of control you have over your game. You can’t simply drop into a match, you have to spawn in Dome City, make your way to the Mission select terminal and then join a queue for either PvE of a certain difficulty or PvP. There is no filtering the matches you’ll join in any way, no choosing the map, and in PvP there’s no picking which of the five game types you’ll end up playing.

To play this shooty game I have to log in, walk to a <something>, then wait in a QUEUE??

          quick-update

There’ll be a new beta update this week, and it’ll include some juicy stuff including some serious usability tweaks… and a new game mode!  Yes.

Cheating and hacking

          cheating-and-hacking

I’ve just finished putting in some anti-hacking features, like hashed passwords, sql-injection prevention, and generally filling some of the more gaping holes in Frozen Synapse.

Cheating is another matter entirely.  If a dirty client decides to send us a turn-file with some kind of hack in it that gets past the checking done on the server, I really leave it to the opponent to report it.  I’ve added the ability to see all submitted turns for all finished matches, thereby making it possible for players to check if they think someone’s cheated.  With all of these things, 99.9% of the time it turns out you’re mistaken and no foul play was going on, but at least there’s a good ability to check now.

I guess if anyone is caught cheating or hacking their account gets instantly deleted…

You guys got any thoughts on any of this?

New beta update released

          new-beta-update-released

There’s a new update available – either through the updater (if it works for you), or by re-downloading the zip you were originally pointed to.  If you can’t work it out, come onto IRC and ask.  I hope to have a new mac version up today as well.

Changelist that I remember:

Fixed errant time-on-time edge when planning for a unit
Move-aim and Check orders now show the full viewcone when being edited
Enemies who you didn’t see at the turn boundary are now in yellow
When watching finished matches, the names are correct and you start watching at turn 0.
You can no longer watch games that are in progress… this will be later be modified so that you can “allow” a certain person to watch your in-progress game from your point of view.
Line-of-sight should work at time 0 always now.
Ability to play many more game modes from the “Play Now” window.

I know that there are some other issues which the beta testers have and I promise I’m getting around to those.

If you wish to be on the beta, the best way is to hang around in #mode7games on irc.maxgaming.net (use the link on the sidebar for IRC) for a while.
