Good podcast! Though I pretty much disagree with everything this week.
Hmm, multiplayer tetris. I dont totally agree here. I have only ever been good (and by good I mean GOOD) at 2 games competitively: Super Smash Bros 64 and TetriNET2. Obviously one of these is a multiplayer tetris game, and it totally rocked. You had bombs which would take single blocks out of their field and put them up in the air of the field, so a single block would be missing from a clearable line. It would really change the pace of the game interestingly! There were tons of other stuff like confuse (re-arranges controls), clear vertical line, nuke field (get rid of all blocks on your or, tactically, your opponents field), etc etc. It rocked! That is all.
As far as using extra processing capability on the NDS, I’m not so sure nintendo would insist on stuff like that with established companies, as square enix have taken the tack of totally ignoring the touch screen beyond basic movement ability (ie if you decide you dont want to use the d-pad) in the final fantasy games.
I love red dead redemption so much. I tied a woman up and watched her get run over by a train and got an achievement for it.
I cannot believe how ANYONE is interested in APB.
Also, Get Him to the Greek? Seriously, I’d rather watch The Human Centipede. I like russell brand, but it consistently amazes me that that kind of comedy can still float at the box office. I guess i’m just a curmudgeon who cant gel with mainstream American humour.
Favourite ian quote: Archa made a weird sword once.
Favourite paul quote: This question is almost completely pointless.

- TetriNET2
I think your reference to bombs is almost a direct vindication of Ian, which is almost certainly a bad thing.
- I think Nintendo don’t mind tooo much if you don’t USE a feature – it’s using a feature in “the wrong way” that upsets them.
- Red Dead Redemption
Um…right.
- Get Him to the Greek
Get Him to the Greek *IS* OK. Re. “MODERN AMERICAN COMEDY” – If you don’t find at least some of The 40 Year Old Virgin funny then you are clearly too mature to be having this discussion and I would like to hire you as my financial advisor. Aside from that, I think it’s ok not to like any of these recent Apatow things – that is a valid stance for a certain kind of person.
- I HATE Russell Brand’s stand up, but I like him as a comic actor – is this ok? Maybe.

@SP vs. MP:
Single player tennis works. So does single player baseball.
The problem with Tetris is that the game mechanics don’t make it suitable for multi player.
A story driven SP game can be turned into an MP with coop mode. Tetris has no story, and the game mechanics don’t quite allow a second player.
@Silver Lining:
They did seem to wake up a bit.
Ian, you’re right, even if Silver Lining is very, very good, they can still hire the studio.
This mod was not the only one that took a lot of time in development. The “The Nameless Mod” for Deus Ex took about 7 years.
@3DS games looking better if not in 3D:
LOL!
If I’m not mistaking, the selling point for the 3DS IS 3D. Otherwise you can use any other hardware platform. I’m with Ian on this, if a game will be developed with a 3D engine, it will have 3D.
Thing is what if the extra 3D will not stick? Will Nintendo ditch their love for 3D and allow games with better graphics and no 3D effect?
@Red Dead Redemption:
Valve brags with their stats and achievements all day. They had the Soldier vs. Demoman war. Anything that puts your game on the spotlight is good.

@Herr_Alien
“A story driven SP game can be turned into an MP with coop mode.”
Not necessarily, and not necessarily easily.
re. Red Dead Redemption – exactly. Valve are masters of this.
§ July 21st, 2010 at 11:01 am
@Red Dead Redemption: Valve are masters at this because they have a bit of a meta game in place: “Dominator – get 3 dominations in a game”, where dominations are themselves achievements.
